Their protection is designed to meet the most extreme conditions such as a flashover in a structural fire.</span></p><p><span>But firefighters do not tackle structural fires on a daily basis. Most operational responses are for rescue operations, accidents or small fires. This means that they are often responding to incidents ‘over protected’ by gear that was designed for more extreme conditions, potentially raising the risk of heat stress.</span></p><p><span>Added to this, their needs not only differ, they can even be conflicting, compromising their operational effectiveness in one scenario for effective protection in another. Freedom of movement and high visibility are essential for technical rescue professionals. Wildland fire operations call for garments that are lightweight and heat-resistant. Firefighters tackling a building fire need maximum insulation and protection against exposure to heat and flame.</span></p><p><span>“The challenge is to reconcile conflicting needs to remove the compromise in operational effectiveness and mitigate the risks of overprotection. Freedom of movement, weather protection and thermal protection cannot be optimized in one garment. Instead of combining multiple requirements in one garment, the concept presents two adaptable garment layers based on existing product technologies.</span></p><p><span>Each can be worn alone or in combination, depending on the mission:</span></p><ul style="list-style-type:disc;"><li data-list-item-id="e4498ff16d7eeb024ae82a471f4ca8f67"><span><strong>Layer 1 for technical rescue operations and other frequent call-outs </strong>is based on the <strong>GORE-TEX® CROSSTECH® PYRAD® Stretch Product Technology</strong>. It is lightweight and designed for freedom of movement and comfort.</span></li><li data-list-item-id="e7651a0752caf8cd8f4d4b9014a23391c"><span><strong>Layer 2 uses GORE-TEX® CROSSTECH® </strong>Product Technology and is a stand-alone solution for wildland fire call-outs and outside operations. It fulfils the performance requirements of EN 469 level 1 and EN ISO 15384.</span></li><li data-list-item-id="e718258c714f26715a6433a83a8b7e569"><span><strong>The two layers can be worn in combination</strong> so that together they provide EN 469 level 2 protection for structural firefighting.</span></li></ul><p><span>Instead of incorporating the required protective features into one and the same garment, they are now integrated into two adaptable clothing layers. This means that the lighter Layer 1 is worn alone for technical rescue operations and Layer 2 for wildland fire call-outs. For structural firefighting operations the two layers are worn together.</span></p><p><span>So, two garment layers now meet the needs of three operational scenarios. These solutions are focused around a layering principle which interprets clothing as a system of fine-tuned, carefully coordinated layers rather than a standard uniform.</span></p><p><span>Examples of these are the Nordic Combat Uniform (NCU) of the Nordic Defence Cooperation and the Flexible Layering Systems of the German police. These concepts are based on a clearly defined layering construction. The individual garment layers are carefully chosen depending on the climate, physical demands and intervention type. Each individual layer may not meet all the requirements, and not all components will be worn together.</span></p><p><span>These layering systems are developed and tested by Gore in realistic situations. Durability testing and wet laboratories, a rain tower, as well as climate and environmental chambers are used for this purpose. These are complemented by field tests conducted by end-users.</span></p><p><span>The underlying motive is to analyze how heat, moisture, physical demands and protection influence each other during operations. They are permanently in use, carry the emergency services over long distances and under changing environmental conditions – and have a direct effect on performance, safety and fatigue. However, many professional models continue to be guided by established design principles, although modern material technologies today enable fundamentally new approaches to protection, comfort and moisture management. At the same time, the application profiles are changing: higher mobility, more frequent climate changes and longer wearing times significantly increase the functional requirements. A new concept study, by the GORE-TEX® brand, illustrates what is possible with EXTRAGUARD product technology in the design and construction of combat boots for military applications and tactical boots for police and government scenarios: the protection of a combat boot, with comfort of a trainer.</strong></span></p><p><span>"The technical basis of the concept study is the GORE-TEX® EXTRAGUARD upper material. It is characterised by extremely low water absorption, fast re-drying and a consistently low weight, even in wet conditions – while at the same time being highly robust and resistant," explains David Bastias, Strategic Marketing for Footwear at the GORE-TEX® brand. "This material characteristic allows for unconventional design solutions that go beyond traditional boot construction methods – especially for uppers, protection zones and moisture management."</span></p><img src="https://content.presspage.com/uploads/2758/000bc002-4af5-49d1-8eb8-23fbbc8ec8a7/1920_1920_soldierintrench.psd.png?53017"><p><span><strong>Development without existing design patterns</strong></span></p><p><span>The study was created with a completely new design – comparable to a technical concept model. Instead of adapting classic leather constructions or typical seams, the boots were freshly designed around GORE-TEX® EXTRAGUARD technology in all components. Central to this new design is the use of fewer seams, which simplifies the boots construction and improves manufacturing efficiency. &nbsp;</span></p><p><span>The study also relied on an unconventional approach in the sole area: The ETPU midsoles of both prototypes come from the performance shoe sector and combine low weight, durable cushioning behavior with high flexibility. A modular torsion shank also provides the necessary stability. The total weight of the prototypes is around 1.2 kilograms per pair which is in line with the range of modern lightweight combat boots - but now offering improved wearer comfort.</span></p><img src="https://content.presspage.com/uploads/2758/0a052093-5f34-4f06-8536-d36bad535400/1920_1920_gore-texextraguardconceptstudycombatandtacticalboots_61.png?53939"><p><span><strong>Military and Police Boot Prototypes Compared</strong></span></p><p><span>The concept study involved two prototypes for different mission profiles. Whilst both prototypes are based on the same basic design architecture and benefit from GORE-TEX® EXTRAGUARD construction – making them permanently waterproof and robust - they differ in the functional design of the individual components. &nbsp;</span></p><p><span>The combat boot for military applications, for example, is equipped with a "Ladder Grip" profile for a secure grip on ladders and metal structures – a frequently requested criterion in military tenders. This prototype was constructed using a Coyote coloured outer with a suede-like appearance.</span></p><p><span>The tactical boot for police and government scenarios, on the other hand, was constructed using a &nbsp;smoother, functionally oriented outsole. Here the focus was on walking comfort and freedom of movement in urban use. Weighing just 320 g/m², the PYRAD® Product Technology by GORE-TEX LABS® is the most lightweight single-layer technology to incorporate class 2 arc-rated protection. The innovation: it combines three layers of material in one laminate layer – the face fabric made of 100 % recycled polyester,<strong> </strong>the membrane incorporating protective PYRAD® Product Technology on both sides, and the skin-friendly backer. In a wearer trail conducted by Deutsche Bahn 19 employees performing tree and vegetation inspections, supervising safety, and managing services tested the HAIX Airpower XR27 safety boots with GORE-TEX® EXTRAGUARD product technology for six months. The boots were worn four or five days a week for between six and nine hours a day – indoors and outdoors, in all weathers and on difficult, uneven surfaces. Fashion design students provided the answer to this question, which they developed together with Gore. The result? Absolutely. Far removed from practice? Not at all.</strong></span></p><p><span>The nine students from the West Saxon University of Applied Sciences Zwickau, Faculty of Applied Arts Schneeberg, developed and produced the innovative concepts themselves. There has been a successful collaboration between the university and Gore for more than two decades. The Putzbrunn-based company is widely known as a manufacturer of GORE-TEX materials. These materials can be found in a wide range of products such as jackets, pants, shoes and gloves - for both leisure and work.</span></p><p><span>"Our fabrics are known for their outstanding properties such as waterproofness and breathability. In addition, some materials offer protection against flames, pathogens or are characterized by special stretchability. I am impressed by how remarkably the designs bring these properties to bear," explains Susanne Wisbrun, clothing specialist at Gore.</span></p><p><span>The requirements in occupational safety are very specific. For example, a track worker needs flame-retardant material to protect him from the dangerous electric arcs that can be caused by high currents. A bicycle courier, on the other hand, needs optimum protection from wind and rain. GORE-TEX Professional Fabrics specializes in this type of protection.</span></p><p><span>But what about the market maturity of these visionary concepts? Some of the prototypes could find their way into series production if demand and technical requirements allow. Self-luminous LEDs, flame-retardant materials and an integrated airbag are fully integrated. The inspiration and valuable feedback came from Alina Negwer's father, who works in this field himself.</span></p><p><span>The </span><i><span>Oceanic Lifeline</span></i><span> model, on the other hand, aims to raise awareness of sea rescue. The jacket combines an unusual design with practical safety at sea and has an integrated lifejacket. "Rescue missions at sea are more important than ever in times of boats carrying refugees. Until now, the robustness and waterproofness of the boots have had a significant influence on comfort - conventional police boots are rather heavy. As the product's service life increases, they can lose their waterproofing, meaning that conventional upper material can become soaked in the rain, making the boots even heavier. Another challenge is the re-drying of soaked boots: it can take many hours before they are completely dry again. The test showed that the protective clothing made progress in the mountains, sometimes climbing and crawling, considerably easier. The 3-layer construction ensures that GORE-TEX safety footwear with EXTRAGUARD upper material construction remains lightweight even during heavy use in rain or snow, as well as protecting against sharp and falling objects, heat, and abrasion. The fabric weighs in ≤330 g/m² which means it is up to 20% lighter than other products currently available in the market. It consists of a nylon outer shell, PYRAD® fabric technology by GORE-TEX LABS, an advanced membrane, and a flame-resistant backer.</span></p><p><span><strong>Nylon outer shell</strong>: this fabric can be dyed into a number of different colour fast shades, has tensile strength and offers excellent abrasion and wear resistance.</span></p><p><span><strong>PYRAD® Fabric Technology</strong>: this adds durable heat, flame, and arc resistant protective properties to the nylon outer shell. The flame-resistant protection from PYRAD® fabric technology is not a chemical treatment or coating. It is inherent to the fabric and as a result it is durable for the life of the product and doesn’t wear off over time. It is made up of countless dots which rapidly react to heat during an arc flash exposure, even before the outer shell has chance to burn.&nbsp; The reaction of the dots causes them to expand by more than 10x larger than their original size and form a stable insulating protective shell of carbonaceous char. This blocks the transfer of heat to skin and stops flame propagation.</span></p><p><span><strong>Membrane</strong>: an extremely light weight and wafer-thin membrane which provides highly breathable and thermally stable properties for strength, flexibility, and mechanical integrity.</span></p><p><span><strong>Flame resistant backer:</strong> this component further reduces the transfer of heat to the wearer.
